Automatic Paper Towel Dispensers in Restrooms

I am a technology lover and I would have never thought that technology could actually hinder personal hygeine but guess what it has. Properly washing and drying ones hands after a trip to the restroom is critical in keeping clean not to mention avoiding sickness. In the old days, there was a manual dispenser that would allow you to take the appropriate number of paper towels to effectively dry your hands. That was nice.

Now, we have the automatic dispenser that requires you to place your hands in front of it. Once you have done that it will dispense one tiny paper towel. The size of the towel is depicted in the photo to the right. (It is really too bad that I couldn't get the hottie holding the paper towel in this photo. Unfortunately, for the women out there, he chose not to be pictured) Back to the small paper towel size: It wouldn't be so bad if you could quickly obtain another towel but it is not that easy. This technological wonder senses that the same hands are craving more paper towels so you have to trick it into thinking that "new hands" have appeared.

Each time I have to trick the dispenser it costs me about 30 seconds of my life. First, I try to see if it will dispense without tricking it and I just keep waving my hand in front of it. (Seconds 1-10) Nothing comes out. Then I get angry because my attempts to get a second towel failed and now I am going to have to trick the device (Seconds 10-15). I walk away from it (Seconds 15-20), then walk back and wave my hands in front of it again (Seconds 20-25). 2nd Towel dispenses (Seconds 25-30). There they are, 30 seconds of my life that I can never get back.

The point of this story: Less is not more when it comes to drying your hands in a public restroom.

Interesting... we are kind of lucky because the dispenser in our public restroom dispenses a paper towel any time someone walks by it, which people have to do in order to enter or leave the restroom. So every time I walk up to it, a tiny paper towel is already hanging there, and I just have to order up an additional one.

1 Question, though... how did you get a hot guy to hold up a paper towel in the bathroom? Where you in the men's or women's restroom working on this story?

And as a parting note, I think they dispense just a tiny paper towel in order to make you conserve. You know, you just finish the drying process on your pants leg ;)

Don't be a coward, if you have something to say use your own name rather than hiding under anonymous.

I think that the dispensers give the right amount of paper. It is just enough to do the job without being wasteful. Unless of course you are my girlfriend, who has big hairy man hands!

You are so awesome! A story on paper towels, just to get a picture of a hot guy!!

i had to comment on this one because i too know the frustration of having to “trick” the automatic paper towel dispensers. the frustration only worsened by the water running down my arms (because, of course, they install those dispensers so high). i think the only thing worse than the automatic paper towel dispenser, is the automatic soap dispensers! i like to feel (and be) clean, so i like using a lot of soap to wash my hands. but, like its counterpart, the silly soap dispenser only gives you a TINY bit at a time!! between the soap and the paper towels, you can spend a lifetime in there!

I really should care less about the hottie because he is obviously married... but I just HATE not knowing! I need to see the face!

Remember as children the coolest thing ever was the hand blower. Especially in cold weather states it was great to wash your hands so you could try to put your whole body under the blower to get warm. My personal favorite was the time I walked in and saw a "teenager" was trying to blow dry her hair. This invention while great for those that were saving the environment used too much power on yet another invention that you had to wipe your hands on your pants afterwards.

Lets invent a dryer that includes the use of men's assistance only. hmmmmmmm I'll take the one holding the towel here (does that require a tip).

Great comments on this one. Here are my responses:

Queen B: The hot guy brought the paper towel out of the mens restroom to show it to me and suggest this story is as blog. I didn't come up with the idea on this one, just the story.

Dora: Yeah, at least it's on a hot guy and not someone else. Proof that the picture you had was just for show!(Wink Wink)

Dawn: I guess we are lucky that Pasadena has a manual paper towel dispenser.

MTC: Shocking that you want to know who the guy is....not.

Jane: I agree, (what a shock) the hand blowers were the absolute coolest growing up!!!!

As far as the men's assistance only dryers, I'm afraid that will take a planning workshop.
