Cellular Coverage & The Grand Canyon

On Thursday, the gentleman next to me on the plane (Not David) told me that he couldn’t wait until he retired so he could throw away his cell phone. True Freedom, is how he described the act of turning off his cell phone. I know of others that feel this way but needless to say I am not one of them. In this technology addicted body, there is no freedom in a lack of cell phone coverage, rather no cell coverage is the equivalent of being imprisoned. There are specific people that if need be I just need to be able to get ahold of, one is my mom, the others, well, you know who you are.

The Grand Canyon is visited by over 5 million people every year. I find it hard to believe that the majority prefer not to have wireless coverage. Please note that once you enter the park, your wireless coverage is gone, that is unless you are a lucky Alltel subscriber. I almost expected to see a sign that stated “Alltel the official wireless provider of the Grand Canyon”. It is 2007 there is no reason there shouldn't be adequete wireless coverage at the Grand Canyon!

Three Declarations:

(1) Any location that attracts more than 500,000 annual visitors should have proper cell phone coverage.
(2) If you are one of those who thinks there is freedom in no cell coverage, just turn your phone off.
(3) I hereby refuse to travel to any location where cell phone coverage is unavailable for significant periods of time.

Well, my loving AT&T who was Cingular who was AT&T doesn't work in the hospital.

I too have issues with AT&T/Cingular/at&t working everywhere...my phone doesn't work at my mom's house. But it's in the 909 so maybe that's why? Then again, my phone number is 909...

It seems that you're limiting yourself with your declarations, Kim. No more vacations to places without proper cell phone coverage? That's a lot of adventures to miss.

Ahhh youth. Will you please revisit this blog each year and share with your loyal following if your declarations remain the same? The old adage "Stop and smell the roses" appears appropriate. Kim, that call can wait.

I have to agree with you 110% on this one. I went to a location where cell phones were not allowed on Thursday afternoon and that had to have been the longest 35minutes of my life!

Kim, I must agree. I have major anxiety attacks without my Sidekick3 attached to me with service. When I travel, I seem to have great luck with it. However, I haven't included the Grand Canyon in my travels. Although I want to. But how can I plan a trip there knowing that my sidekick won't work? Hmmm...

ruthanne: This is the only good benefit of moving out of the hospital and into the corporate office.

jennann: I absolutely hate the 909.

ann: slight retraction: If I am with the people that are in my must be available list then I can take those adventures.

cap'n jeff: I stop and smell the roses. I just need to know that if need be, I can get to the people that I need to.

dora: Yes, this is a reason that Houstons lunches need to be few and far between.

jinjer: It's a big ditch and your cell phone won't work. Stay in Newport.

Kim, It must be your provider. As I have been there numerous times, and have been able to use my phone. And it's NOT an AllTel phone

I am glad you retracted your original statement. I know now you will still travel with me sometimes. But I do agree with Ann and cap'n jeff. The Grand Canyon isn't the only National Park without good cell coverage. Remember Yellowstone???? Remember standing in "1" place for hours so you could talk on your cell phone? But, I also have to admit that particular time it was needed. I have to admit I am glad not to be so connected to my phone. 143 Mom

1/2 the time my phone doesnt work at my house but I don't use it that much anyway so this isn't a problem. With your important traveling job I can see this being hard. I'll vote for you, cell coverage at the grand canyon is important. lol

While in Cabo San Lucas we went deep sea fishing. In the middle of the ocean t-mobile worked.

I am panic'ing about going to the Grand Canyon in Otober where I will go days without my coverage.

Damn.
