Mr. President

I don't care whether the President is Republican or Democrat. Whether we share the same views or hold opposite opinions. Whether they sleep with an intern or their wife. The President of the United States should be referred to as The President.

During the last election it irritated me to no end how news anchors and opponents would call President Bush, Mister Bush. You don't call the President, Mister Bush, you call the President either "The President" or "Mr. President". It is simply a recognition of the President of the United States. I don't mind if they just refer to the President by their last name but adding the "Mister" is offensive...at least to me. Same goes for the Vice President.

The NY Times today talks about Vice President Cheney receiving a new cardioverter defibrillator. The title refers to him simply as "Cheney". The first sentence of the article refers to "Vice President Cheney" but later in the article he is only referred to as "Mr. Cheney".

"Bush", that's fine.
"President Bush", that's better.
"Mr. Bush", not so much.

So rarely does the champ take a political stance. I am in awe at the passion on this political topic.

I agree in this respect factor. My passion however is stronger on the elected officials of house of representatives and senate. It annoys me that one is a Representative and one is a Senator but either can be called Congressman or Honorable.

Our society as a whole is losing respect for our elders, whatever their title is.

I must agree that this has also bothered me. I have actually heard the media address FORMER President Clinton as Mr.President. This was way AFTER he had been out of office! It makes me furious! I know I lean a little too much to the right sometimes but I think the media in this country is FAR TOO MUCH to the left. They are SUPPOSED to be impartial and fair. I haven't seen any of that since we have had a Republican President. If President Bush had been receiving "favors" from interns in his office, they would be very unforgiving. Unlike the media who has all but forgotten what the Oval office was used for not long ago!

Whew! I will now get off of my soap box!

I concur with everything that Jane said :)

very much like the Queen should always be referred to as Queen B, not Miz B.

Can't say I disagree. When the media addresses a titled person then they should most certainly follow protocol. I have always dispised it when the media would refer to President Bush as dubbya-totally disrespectful. Andria-THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS LEANING TOO FAR TO THE RIGHT! Additionally I have the distinct honor of never having used the title of President and the person who preceded Bush in office in the same sentence (but I'm not the media-LOL). He truly gave meaning to the statement-Absolute power corrupts absolutely!

I totally agree with Jane and Ruth Anne.

But, that being said, our current President leaves much to be desired. See "It Could Happen" at the top of my blog: www.annnelson.blogspot.com.

I'm hoping we make a bett er choice for the next one!

But I do agree: if they are voted in (not necessarily earned the title) they should be referred to as "Mr. President".

It is supposed to be "the man" and not the office. Or is it the office who takes over the man?

Quite the commentary. I can see you now on Meet the Press. That's my girl.

On top of everything else, she knows who Alan Simpson is.
