Israel's Asian restaurants protested today by serving no egg rolls. Apparently, the Israeli government plans on doing away with foreign cooks and hiring Israeli’s to cook in Asian restaurants.
Before I go on with my thoughts on this I have to share with you the quote that made me want to blog about this story. The head of the Israeli Ethnic Restaurant Organization made the following statement to the media "Today there is no egg roll and in two weeks time there will be no sushi and noodles." LOL! A lawyer for the Israeli's has countered that the Israeli's can easily make Asian food and issued the following statement "Everyone can make Chinese food it's not impossible to learn"
For some reason, the thought of Chinese food in Israel made me crack up. Here, in America, we have everything, every type of food imaginable is available to us. Why would I think that if I went to Israel I would only have Jewish food options? I guess that’s what I thought.....weird huh? I mean McDonalds is everywhere..... but Sushi in Tel Aviv just seems weird.

Funny I had the same wondering about 3 weeks ago when eating sushi. I asked my husband if when we travel to Europe (no time soon) will I still be able to get sushi?
He had no idea, exact quote "I have never been to Europe and I don't eat sushi". So I asked a close friend who has traveled many places.... In other countries they only serve their food, no sushi in Italy :-( bummer.
This is however weird since they already have Asian restaurants. Do you think they will have an updating article about how crappy the Asian food now is???
well, champ, america is THE melting pot! but, i suppose that even israli's would like a little variety in their diet!
the funniest thing about this to me is that the slow demise of asian food is newsworthy. maybe i am a little biased (and sticking with my people) but, i have to agree with the lawyer. how many times have we seen a hispanic cook, for example, in a chinese restaurant? i'm not a professional cook, but i know i can follow a recipe and make meals/items that fall outside of my own ethnicity.
:)
I have yet to find a good chinese restaurant in Arizona. Guess the search will continue outside the country!
RO! Yeah, Hispanics can make any type of food, so I imagine the Israelis can learn to make egg rolls. Or they can get them from Lean Cuisine :)
LOLOLOLOL! What you said is so true Kim!
I have a really hard time when I am somewhere with the majority of food being of one type - say I am in Mexico with a ton of Mexican food available. I have a very hard time eating pizza or steak or a burger in Mexico (except if I am at a 5 star resort and it's room service :P). So needless to say, even if they serve Asian food in Israel, I will not in any way be partaking in the consumption of it!
I was going to post a very un-PC comment about who cooks the Chinese food in America, but thought better of it.
Well, it is probably a good thing I don't like egg rolls. When they eliminate fried rice, I will turn into an advocate.
I'm with Jane...there are no good chinese restaurants in Arizona. I have to wait until I go east once a year to have really good chinese food.
Rachel makes the best egg rolls (without egg) and really, that's all that matters :)
Anti Semite!
Wow....I'm surprised they've found other subjects to worry about in Isreal.
(totally off subject--saw the pic of Laura's Lean Beef!! They are headquartered here in Lexington! My mom used to work there! You may be eating beef raised by nuns!)
