Baby "ESPN"

So, on Sunday, Leann Real gave birth to a baby boy in Biloxi Mississippi. She had a deal with her husband that if the kid was a boy, he got to name it. So this father (who loves sports) decided to name his new son, ESPN Montana. Apparently, this is the fourth baby ESPN born in the last two years.

This new trend called "baby name branding" is not isolated to ESPN. In the last couple of years naming your child after a brand has become quite popular. According to several baby names sources, the following brand names have become just about as common as Jack and Jill:
  • Infiniti
  • Nautica
  • Timberland
  • Del Monte
  • Lexus
  • Armani
  • Nivia
  • Pepsi
  • Chanel
  • Stetson

Several years ago there was a Seinfeld episode where George wanted to name his kid "Seven" after Mickey Mantle. I tell you now that if I ever name my child after a number, the name will be "Twenty-Four".

The thought of someone naming their kid after a product is just trashy. Didn’t I already comment on trash?? With names like these, they are slated to become a stripper or a crack dealer. - JEF

From someone who grew up with an unusual (now quite common) name, DON'T GET CREATIVE PEOPLE!!!

Yes, you appreciate the name once you're older... but you get hell growing up--and those are the formative years.

But now that I think about it, a name or brand is not being creative. You're just ripping off someone else's creativity.

It strikes me as odd how much time most new parents struggle over the perfect name for their newborn bundle of joy. (Clearly not the case in Kim's example) Sadly as they grow into adolescents they change their names to something more meaningful and descriptive. My Christopher has somehow become "Squeaks." I am sure our dashing young ESPN will go over the top with something like Bob...
